Seven Lions Rescued

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Rix Family Foundation and other critical supporters, all seven lions have been successfully rescued and safely transferred to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.

Moving day was a carefully orchestrated effort that brought together a team of 15 professionals, including big cat specialists and two veterinarians with expertise in large carnivores. The day began early, with each lion gently sedated to allow for thorough health check-ups and scans before transport. Once cleared, each lion was securely crated and loaded into specially designed transport vehicles specifically for big cat relocation.

After a nine-hour journey from Quebec to northern Ontario, the convoy arrived at Aspen Valley. There, Aspen’s veterinarian conducted a second round of wellness checks to ensure the lions were stable and ready to be released into their new, purpose-built enclosures.

When the doors of the crates opened, it was a moment of pure magic. One by one, the lions stepped out—some bounding, others cautiously exploring—into their expansive new habitat. Our team described a palpable sense of relief and joy as the lions took their first steps into freedom. It was immediately clear that they felt safe, curious, and at ease in their new surroundings.

Just three months ago, these lions were facing a heartbreaking fate—at risk of euthanasia after being exploited as a roadside attraction. Their lives, once reduced to a spectacle for profit, were nearly lost due to the neglect and cruelty of those who should have protected them.

But today, all seven lions are thriving. They have space to roam, hills to climb, and the sun on their backs—finally able to live as they were meant to.

As our team said goodbye and began the drive home, they looked back to see the lions peacefully lounging on the hills of their new home, soaking in the warmth and freedom they so richly deserve.
